What is Idrija Miners’ Houses?
The Idrija Miners’ House is a specific architectural type, which was formed in the 18th century in the specific historical, economic, social and environmental conditions of Idrija. The miners’ houses are characterised by their high and symmetrical façades, steep roofs and characteristic arrangement of rooms.
The houses were built by the mine workers from natural, locally available materials on land allocated to them by their employer, the mercury mine. But the miners’ houses did not serve just one family, as the owners – the miners – rented out the surplus space to tenants – also miners – creating dynamic communities of working-class owners and tenants.
